ROME – “Elementary Watson!” Says the Inspector Holmes placing his lips on his pipe, “Tobacco is harmful to health regardless of the instrument with which it is consumed.” Nestled in the pipe, rolled in a cigar or cut up in a cigarette, the result is the same: to kill. This is attested to by the sceptics, a study published in the ‘Annals of Internal Medicine by researchers at Columbia University Medical Centre in New York.
Research has examined the cases of more than 3528 heavy smokers aged between 48 and 90 years. If among them there were many differences in “style”, since 52% smoked cigarettes, 11 cigars% and 9% the pipe, the effects were almost the same for everyone. The level of pulmonary obstruction of hardcore smoking, in fact, was twice than typically found in non-smokers.
Translated in terms of health, smoking tobacco means to meet a high risk of contracting extremely damaging respiratory diseases such as emphysema, obstructive pneumonia and, in the worst cases, cancer. It matters little if, in the veins of pipe and cigar smokers, the respective flows 10% and 20% less nicotine ripest consumers of cigarettes.
