The various types of breast cancer have very different characteristics, which affect the ‘aggressiveness, clinical course, and finally the prognosis. The new discovery shows that in fact this heterogeneity is due to the different content in cancer stem cells. In particular cases are more aggressive than those in which the tumor tissue is richer in these cells. Cancer stem cells represent a small fraction of the tumor mass, but they are the real leaders of the birth and development of cancer because they are able to duplicate virtually limitless.
Precisely these cancer stem cells determine tumor growth. Similar to the case for stem cells in normal physiological process of generation of tissues, cancer stem cells are the real cause of the proliferation of tumor tissue. Cancer stem cells, unfortunately, in many cases able to resist chemotherapy and radiotherapy, caused the failure. Hence their dangerousness el ‘importance to shed light on the biology of cancer stem cells in order to grasp the processes tumor.
MEDICAL RESEARCH ON BREAST CANCER: from normal stem cells to the study of cancer stem cells

In their research, scientists in Milan started the study of the characteristics of normal stem cells. The first step was the ‘invention of a method to isolate sufficient quantities of stem cells, a’ difficult task because of their scarcity. This has allowed us to obtain the complete molecular characterization of normal stem cells and then make comparisons with cancer stem cells, resulting in a series of specific markers able to identify the stem cells of breast cancers.
Using these markers, researchers have shown that only cancer stem cells are capable of giving rise to new tumors, and more. Comparing the different types of breast cancers, it is clear that, despite their heterogeneity, all tumors (from more to less aggressive) can be attributed to two main groups based on the amount of cancer stem cells contained in the tumor. More aggressive tumors and worse prognosis are those that contain the highest number of cancer stem cells.

The research is important to improve analysis of the ‘aggressiveness of breast cancers in order to determine the most appropriate therapy. The study of cancer stem cells is also important to develop new drugs that have the potential to cure the disease.

The aim of the initiative is to sensitize all women about the importance of preventing breast cancer and to achieve an early diagnosis of this by regularly to appropriate diagnostic tests, currently considered the most effective means to defeat this insidious enemy.

In Italy, 1 in 10 women is sick with breast cancer (last year there were over 40 thousand cases), but with increasing incidence over the last twenty years in industrialized countries, has identified a steady decline in mortality of less than 10 thousand deaths each year.

The choice of treatment should not be postponed for coexistence with pregnancy. The most common treatment for women diagnosed with breast cancer or locally advanced node-positive during pregnancy, after the first trimester chemotherapy followed by surgery, usually after childbirth. Radiotherapy is not used until after delivery.

Forecast

Pregnant women with breast cancer have a prognosis similar to that of patients without the disease. Yet it’s hard to deliver an accurate forecast due to the low prevalence of breast cancer associated with pregnancy.
